forgive my thoughts
Wednesday, December 5th, 2007..on the effects of social situation with regards to the performance of individuals. well i have gathered from our film viewing last last week that people improve their performance depending upon the situation they are in. in the film, individuals who wore uniforms and complete in their regala performed well in manipulated simulated activities compared to those individuals who didnt have their uniforms on.. well the point is that, people perform more whenever they are motivated by the social situation. such is the case in PBB. the housemates are in an artificial, simulated environment wherein they are being assessed and observed not only by one individual but by the whole nation. there is a tendency for the housemates to adapt a new character, one which can enable them to adapt to the situation, temporarily acquiring behaviors and attitudes which are manifestations of defense mechanisms to the anxiety producing reality of the following social pressures: of knowing that they will be scrutinized, judged and speculated upon by strangers, acommodating and integrating the presence of new rules which may be offensive to their own personal rights and performing unnecessary, increduluos, seemingly significant, and dreadfully meaningless tasks. i know that at this point i am deviating from the topic. forgive me but i just have to post my comments and criticisms of one of my favorite shows PBB. it isa good reality show because it allows us to see how people can be artificial and real at the same time. anyhow, the simulated environment has a psychological effect on every housemate, each housemate contribute to the development of the living atmosphere inside the house. their is a high probability of developing intense emotions because of the limited and constricted perspective brought about by the enclosed environment. They are virtually isolated from society. What they have in the house is what they will ever get. Therefore emotions and feelings tend to increase in its intensity as the number of individuals in their enviornment decreases. whenever someone goes out, they lose a big part of their society, which gradually increases the use of psychological defense mechanisms to isolation, loneliness and despair.
well thats about it.

very well thought off.
but really, do we need to put so much analysis on that show? i mean, its an entertainment show. but since your post made me think about it, let me share my two cents on this one as well…
while it is true that each is connected and contributes to the overall atmosphere of the house, it can also be argued that a huge chunk of the conditions are imposed to them by the Big Brother. Limiting their food supply, adding twists to the games and many other set of factors imposed to them “shape” their attitudes and persona. So irregardless of their agendas, behavior and drama, the society they move around into, will continually change. Yes, defense mechanism will always be there. But i think the primary reason they have a heightened sense for defense mechanism is because the fact that the show is highly unpredictable.
Anyway… while PBB is a host to many social phenomena and whatnot, it is best left for leisure. i just enjoy watching it.
